You've got people coming Saturday. Somewhere in the back of the cupboard is a stack of reusable cups you bought for exactly this reason, the ones with the bamboo speckle and the little leaf on the box.
Pick one up and try to answer a simple question. What is it actually made of?
Most of us can't. And the reusable cup industry has built a fair bit of its margin on that, because you'll pay more for something that looks like it came from a forest, and almost nobody turns the cup over to read the fine print.
Some of those cups are exactly what they say they are. Plenty of others are plastic in a costume.
The short version

If you're reading this standing up, here's the whole thing:

Bamboo fibre cups are usually bamboo dust glued together with melamine resin. That's a plastic, and it leaches when you pour something hot in.

Compostable cups are plastic made from corn. Most need an industrial facility your council probably doesn't have.

"Recyclable" describes what's technically possible, not what happens. Australia recycles about 13% of its plastic.

Paper cups are lined with plastic. That's what stops them going soggy.
- Silicone is a different material altogether, made from sand rather than crude oil. It has its own catch, and we'll be upfront about it further down.
Start with the bamboo one, because it's the worst

Bamboo is a genuinely brilliant material. Grows fast, needs almost no water, regrows without replanting. The catch is that bamboo fibre on its own can't hold the shape of a cup.
So it gets ground into powder and glued together with melamine-formaldehyde resin. The resin is the structure. The bamboo is the filler, and often the smaller part of what you're holding.
In 2019, the German consumer testing body Stiftung Warentest put 12 reusable bamboo cups through repeated hot-drink cycles. Seven of the twelve failed.
Germany's food safety institute went further after testing hundreds of these products and told people outright: don't drink anything hot out of them.
The levels of formaldehyde coming off into the liquid were many times what's considered safe for an adult, and the margin was worse for kids, who are smaller and drinking the same warm milo out of the same cup.
The bit that gets me is the marketing. These things are sold on biodegradability. Melamine resin won't break down in your garden. It won't break down in a commercial composting facility either. It can't go through plastic recycling. It gets burned or buried, and that's the whole list.
Worth saying: a bamboo lid or a bamboo sleeve on a different cup body is a completely different product. It's the moulded bamboo fibre cup you want to look at twice.
How to check any cup in about 30 seconds

You don't need a chemistry degree for this. You need four questions, and you can do it standing in the aisle.
What's it made of, named specifically?
"Food-grade silicone" or "18/8 stainless steel" is something you can check. "Eco-friendly material" or "plant-based" tells you nothing at all. Vagueness is the tell.
If it says bamboo, is the bamboo holding it together?
Lid or sleeve, fine. Moulded cup body, there's a resin in there. If the brand won't name the binder, assume the worst.
If it says compostable, compostable where?
In Australia, look for AS 5810 (home compost) or AS 4736 (commercial facility). If it only carries AS 4736, your back fence compost bin won't touch it.
Would you still own this in five years?
This one outranks the other three. A reusable cup only earns back the footprint of making it by being used over and over. One that cracks, stains or goes cloudy by March gets replaced, and the replacement starts the maths again.
The two words doing the most damage

Compostable
PLA cups are made from fermented corn sugar, which sounds lovely. The "bio" in bioplastic refers to where the carbon came from, not what happens at the end.
It's still a polymer, and it needs weeks at around 55 to 60°C to break down properly. Your compost bin sits nowhere near that. Researchers at University College London tracked home-compostable plastics in real household bins for two years and found about 60% didn't fully break down.
So it goes in the compost, the compost goes on the veggie patch, and the plastic goes into the soil.
Recyclable
It means the material can be recycled, assuming the facility exists, the item gets sorted properly, someone wants to buy the output, and you rinsed it. Australia's plastic recycling rate has been stuck around 13% for years.
A brand can print "100% recyclable" with complete accuracy and still be describing something that will almost certainly end up in landfill. Nothing in that word obliges anyone to actually recycle it.
While we're here: the takeaway coffee cup isn't paper. Paper doesn't hold hot liquid.
There's a thin plastic film fused to the inside, which is why the cup works and why researchers measuring one found roughly 25,000 microscopic plastic particles released into a hot drink in fifteen minutes. That's about how long a flat white lasts.
So how is any of this allowed?

Because until recently nobody was checking.
In 2023 the ACCC went through 247 Australian businesses and reviewed the environmental claims on their websites. More than half, 57%, were making claims the regulator flagged as concerning.
It has since published guidance saying claims need to be specific, backed by evidence, and can't leave out the bit that changes the picture. Words like "eco" and "green" mean nothing on their own under Australian Consumer Law.
The rules are catching up. Most of what's already on the shelf was labelled before anyone was looking properly, which is why this still lands on you at the checkout.
The swaps that actually hold up

Most plastic-free kitchen advice starts at the bin and works backwards. Start at the drawer you open every day instead.
Outdoor drinkware first, because that's where glass fails and disposables win by default. You're not taking the good wine glasses to the pool.
Unbreakable wine glasses and reusable wine glasses solve that same Saturday problem, and the difference between them shows up around year three, when one set is still in the rotation and the other has quietly been replaced twice.
Then reusable tableware. Serving boards, placemats, chopping surfaces. They get used constantly, take a beating, and are usually the cheapest thing in the kitchen for exactly that reason.
Buying once at a higher price is the least glamorous decision on this list and the one that does the most work.
Then the party drawer. Sustainable entertaining falls over the moment you host more people than you own glasses for, which is precisely when someone reaches for the plastic cups. Owning enough of something you'll keep is the whole fix.
None of this needs a lifestyle overhaul. It needs buying fewer, better things and being a bit annoying about what they're made of.
Where silicone sits, honestly

Now our turn, because you should be skeptical of a silicone brand writing an article about misleading cups.
Food-grade silicone is made from silica, which comes from sand, bonded with oxygen. It isn't a petroleum plastic and it doesn't contain BPA, BPS or phthalates.
It's chemically stable across a wide temperature range, which is why it doesn't leach the way melamine resin does when something hot goes in, and why it survives the dishwasher and the freezer without breaking down. Here's the part that doesn't fit on a swing tag.
Silicone won't compost. Put one in the garden bed and it'll still be there long after you've moved house. It can't go in your kerbside recycling either, because household streams aren't built to process it. Specialist programs exist and they aren't common.
Which means silicone's environmental case rests on one thing only: how long you keep it. A goblet that survives ten summers of pool parties, camping trips and dropped-on-concrete moments has replaced a lot of broken glass and a very large number of disposable cups.
The same goblet given up on after one season is a worse outcome than the glass you'd have kept.

What to do now
Turn over whatever you're drinking from. Find the material. If the packaging is long gone and the brand's website won't say in plain words what it's made of, take the silence as your answer.
Then keep what you already own for as long as it lasts, because the most sustainable cup in Australia is the one sitting in someone's cupboard right now.
When it finally gives up, buy the one you won't have to replace again.

Is silicone a plastic?
No. Silicone is a synthetic polymer made from silica (sand) rather than petroleum. Some researchers group it with plastics because it's synthetic, but it behaves very differently.
It's more heat resistant, more chemically stable, and it doesn't contain BPA, BPS or phthalates. It also doesn't biodegrade, so how long you use it is what determines whether it was the better choice.
Are bamboo cups safe to drink from?
Bamboo fibre cups are typically bound with melamine-formaldehyde resin. German government testing found these can release formaldehyde and melamine into hot liquids at levels well above what's considered safe, with the highest exposure risk for children.
Cold drinks are much lower risk. Hot drinks are the problem. Bamboo lids and sleeves on a non-bamboo cup body don't carry the same issue.
Is silicone safe for food and drink?
Food-grade silicone is approved for food contact by the FDA and equivalent bodies, and it's stable from around -20°C to 100°C in everyday use without leaching.
Look for products that specify food-grade or platinum-cured silicone, plus BPA, BPS and phthalate free labelling. Cheap filler-heavy silicone from unverified suppliers is a different story, which is why brand transparency matters.
What does "compostable" actually mean on a cup?
It means the cup breaks down under specific conditions, and the standard tells you which. AS 5810 is home composting. AS 4736 is commercial facilities that hold material at high heat for weeks.
A cup carrying only AS 4736 won't break down properly in a backyard bin, and UCL researchers found around 60% of home-compostable plastics failed to fully break down even in home compost.
Is silicone better than plastic for entertaining?
Outdoors, yes. It won't crack when dropped, won't go brittle in the sun, won't hold onto odours or stain the way polypropylene does, and it handles the freezer and the dishwasher.
It's also unbreakable, which matters around a pool or on a boat where glass isn't allowed. The trade-off is a higher price upfront and no kerbside recycling.
What's the most sustainable reusable cup?
The one you keep longest. Every reusable cup carries the footprint of making it, and that only gets paid back through use.
A cup that lasts a decade beats a compostable cup replaced every season, whatever the packaging says.
